Pale Moon Browser 31.1 Release

The release of the Pale Moon 31.1 web browser has been published, which forked from the Firefox codebase to provide higher performance, preserve the classic interface, minimize memory consumption and provide additional customization options. Pale Moon builds are generated for Windows and Linux (x86 and x86_64). The project code is distributed under the MPLv2 (Mozilla Public License).

The project adheres to the classic organization of the interface, without switching to the Australis interface integrated in Firefox 29, and with the provision of extensive customization options. Removed components include DRM, Social API, WebRTC, PDF viewer, Crash Reporter, statistics collection code, parental controls, and people with disabilities. Compared to Firefox, the browser retains support for XUL technology and retains the ability to use both full-fledged and lightweight themes.

In the new version:

  • Added and enabled by default the Mojeek search engine, which does not depend on other search engines and does not filter the content presented to users. Unlike DuckDuckGo, Mojeek is not a metasearch engine, it maintains its own independent search index and does not use indexes from other search engines. Data indexing is supported in English, French and German.
  • Implemented a boolean assignment operator "x ??= y" that only performs an assignment if "x" is null or undefined.
  • Fixes and improvements related to hardware acceleration support.
  • Fixed issues in XPCOM that caused crashes.
  • Fixed issue with displaying large tooltips that do not fit in the visible area.
  • Improved support for multimedia formats. For MP4 playback on Linux, libavcodec 59 and FFmpeg 5.0 libraries are supported.
  • The showPicker() method has been added to the HTMLInputElement class, which displays a ready-made dialog for filling in typical values in the fields with type "date".
  • The NSS library has been updated to version 3.52.6. The NSS library returned support for FIPS mode.
  • Memory handling has been improved in the JavaScript engine.
  • The FFvpx codec support layer has been updated to version 4.2.7.
  • Improved compatibility with animated Gif encoders.
  • Improved file selection dialogs on the Windows platform.
  • Restored support for the gMultiProcessBrowser property to improve compatibility with Firefox add-ons. At the same time, the multiprocessing content processing mode is still disabled, and the gMultiProcessBrowser property always returns false (gMultiProcessBrowser support is required for add-ons that define work in multiprocessing mode).
  • Moved fixes for security issues from the Mozilla repositories.
