Chrome OS Release 114

A release of the Chrome OS 114 operating system is available, based on the Linux kernel, the upstart system manager, the ebuild / portage assembly tool, open components and the Chrome 114 web browser. The Chrome OS user environment is limited to a web browser, and web applications are involved instead of standard programs, however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop and taskbar. The source texts are distributed under the Apache 2.0 free license. Chrome OS build 114 is available for most current Chromebook models. Chrome OS Flex edition is offered for use on regular computers.

Key changes in Chrome OS 114:

  • A separate page has been added to the configurator (ChromeOS Settings) for selecting sound devices and adjusting the volume and microphone.

  • Added support for floating windows that can be stacked or docked on top of other windows. For example, you can open a note-taking application in a floating window while watching a lecture. Floating mode is enabled through the current window's layout menu, the Search + Z keyboard shortcut, or a down screen gesture from the top center of the window.
  • App Streaming has been added to broadcast windows of applications running on Android devices to the Chrome OS screen.

  • The Explore (formerly Get Help) built-in help app now has an App and games tab that provides an overview of popular new Chromebook apps and games.
  • Now you can use shared albums hosted in Google Photos as a source for setting desktop wallpaper or screen saver.
  • Added support for seamless connection to wireless networks protected with Passpoint technology (Hotspot 2.0), without the need to search for a network and authenticate each time you connect (the first login is remembered in relation to the location, after which all subsequent connections are made automatically).
  • For centrally managed systems, support has been added for enabling required add-ons that run in incognito mode without the user being able to disable them.
  • Minecraft for Chrome OS has been released.
  • Fixed 7 vulnerabilities, including buffer overflows in the rewrite_1d_image_coordinate and set_stream_out_varyings functions, use-after-free memory access in the vrend_draw_bind_abo_shader and sampler_state functions, a race condition in the amdgpu_ttm_tt_get_user_pages function, bypass wireless debugging restrictions in the adb utility, and the ability to run an unsigned digital code signing by uploading a modified version of RMA shim.
