Debian 10 "Buster" release

Debian 10 "Buster" release

Members of the Debian community are pleased to announce the next stable release of the Debian 10 operating system, codenamed buster.

This release includes over 57703 packages built for the following processor architectures:

  • 32-bit PC (i386) and 64-bit PC (amd64)
  • 64-bit ARM (arm64)
  • ARM EABI
  • ARMv7 (EABI hard-float HELP, armhf)
  • MIPS (mips (big endian) and mipsel (big endian))
  • 64-bit MIPS little-endian (mips64el)
  • 64-bit PowerPC byte-endian (ppc64el)
  • IBM System z (s390x)

Compared to Debian 9 stretch, Debian 10 buster adds 13370 new packages and upgrades over 35532 packages (which is 62% of the stretch distribution). Also, for various reasons, many packages (over 7278, 13% of the stretch distribution) have been removed from the distribution.

Debian 10 buster ships with various desktop environments such as GNOME 3.30, KDE Plasma 5.14, LXDE 10, LXQt 0.14, MATE 1.20, and Xfce 4.12. Also in the repository are Cinnamon 3.8, Deepin DE 3.0, various window managers.

Great attention in the preparation of this release was paid to improving the security of the distribution:

  • Support for booting with UEFI Secure Boot has been added to the Debian installer.
  • When creating encrypted partitions, the LUKS2 format is now used
  • For new installations of Debian 10, support for the AppArmor application access control system is enabled by default. The installation will only download AppArmor profiles for a very limited number of applications, to add additional profiles it is recommended to install the apparmor-profiles-extra package
  • The apt package manager has added the optional ability to use isolation of installed applications using the seccomp-BPF mechanism.

There are many other changes in the release related to support for new software and hardware features:

  • The Linux kernel has been updated to version 4.19.
  • The netfilter firewall management system has been changed from Iptables to Nftables. At the same time, for those who wish, the ability to use Iptables with the help of iptables-legacy is preserved.
  • Due to updates to CUPS packages to version 2.2.10 and cups-filters to version 1.21.6, Debian 10 buster now supports driverless printing for modern IPP printers.
  • Basic support for systems based on the Allwinner A64 SOC.
  • With the default installation of the Gnome desktop environment, a session based on the Wayland puncture is enabled by default. It retains X11 based session support.
  • The Debia-live team has created new Debian live images based on the LXQt desktop environment. Also added to all Debian live images is the Calamares universal installer.

Changes have also been made to the Debian installer. So the syntax of automated installation files with answers has changed, translated into 76 languages, including completely into 39 languages.

As always, Debian fully supports upgrading from a previous stable release using the native apt package manager.

Full support for the Debian 10 buster release will continue until the next stable release plus one year. Debian 9 stretch has been moved to the status of a previous stable release and will be maintained by the Debian Security Team until July 6, 2020, after which it will be released to the LTS team for further limited support within Debian LTS.
