After 5 months of development, the release of the Cinnamon 5.2 user environment has been formed, within the framework of which the distribution developer community Linux Mint is a fork of the GNOME Shell, the Nautilus file manager, and the Mutter window manager, aimed at providing a classic GNOME 2-style environment while maintaining the successful GNOME Shell interface elements. Cinnamon is based on GNOME components, but these components are delivered as a periodically synchronized fork, free of external dependencies from GNOME. A new release of Cinnamon will be offered in the distribution. Linux Mint 20.3, which is scheduled to be released at the end of December.
Main innovations:
- In the Mint-X theme, the style of the notification block and the panel in the Nemo file manager has been optimized. Instead of two different themes for dark and light headings, a common theme has been implemented that dynamically changes color depending on the selected mode. Removed support for the combo theme, which combines dark titles with light windows. Improved display of applications with separate dark interfaces in a light theme based environment (we are talking about applications such as Celluloid, Xviewer, Pix, Hypnotix and GNOME terminal, which have their own light and dark theme switcher).
The Mint-Y theme defaulted to a light bar (mint-X left it dark) and added a new set of emblems to show on icons.
- Window title bar design has been changed—the size of window control buttons has been increased, and additional padding has been added around icons to make them easier to click. Shadow rendering has been redesigned to unify the appearance of windows, regardless of whether they are rendered on the application side (CSD) or Server. The corners of the windows are rounded.
- Gray color is used to highlight active elements, regardless of the selected color theme.
- Improved GTK4 support.
- Added an operation confirmation dialog displayed when trying to delete a panel.
- Added a setting to disable scrolling in the change applet virtual desktop.
- Added setting to disable window labels.
- A setting has been added to the notification output applet to disable the display of the notification counter in the system tray.
- Provided automatic updating of the icon of the grouped list of windows when adding a new window to the group.
- In the menu for all applications, the display of symbolic icons is implemented and application buttons are hidden by default.
