Mir 2.8 display server release

The release of the display server Mir 2.8 is presented, the development of which continues by Canonical, despite the refusal to develop the Unity shell and the Ubuntu edition for smartphones. Mir remains in demand in Canonical projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of things (IoT). Mir can be used as a composite server for Wayland, which allows you to run any applications using Wayland (for example, built with GTK3/4, Qt5 or SDL2) in Mir-based environments. Installation packages are prepared for Ubuntu 20.04, 21.10 and 22.04 (PPA) and Fedora 33, 34, 35 and 36. The project code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.

In the new version:

  • Added support for an experimental wlr_screencopy_unstable_v1 protocol extension that allows you to create utilities for creating screenshots.
  • During assembly, code generation with Wayland protocol definitions is provided.
  • The graphics platform code and API has been redesigned to support future heterogeneous and hybrid GPU environments.
  • Added "--x11-window-title" option to set window title on X11 platform.
  • Implemented assembly and testing of Mir on systems with RISC-V architecture.
  • Provided build validation on experimental branches of Ubuntu 22.10, Fedora Rawhide, Debian Sid, and Alpine Edge.
