CachyOS distribution release 260426, based on the Arch package base, has been released. Linux, which uses a continuous update delivery model and is popular among computer gamers. According to ProtonDB, the CachyOS project is the most popular distribution. Linux (21.1% share) used by gamers.
The distribution is notable for its performance optimizations and the ability to install various desktop environments. In addition to the base KDE-based environment, GNOME, Xfce, i3WM, Wayfire, LXQT, OpenBox, Cinnamon, Cosmic, Niri, MangoWM, LXDE, Mate, Budgie, Qtile, Hyprland, and Sway are available for installation. The installation ISO image is 3.1 GB in size. A separate build (2.8 GB) for wearable devices (Handheld Edition) is available, featuring a GameMode-style interface and components for computer gamers.
The distribution includes the BORE task scheduler by default, optimized to reduce desktop latency and increase the priority of interactive processes. The kernel and packages are built with LTO (Link-Time Optimization) optimizations enabled and instructions available in processors based on the x86-64-v3, x86-64-v4, and Zen4 microarchitectures used. When building base packages, PGO (Profile-Guided Optimization) or BOLT (Binary Optimization and Layout Tool) optimizations are additionally enabled. btrfs, zfs, ext4, xfs, and f2fs can be used as file systems.
Major changes:
- The installer uses the new Shelly package management interface, which provides both a command-line interface and a GTK4-based GUI with Wayland support. The libalpm library is used for package management. In addition to the main repositories, AUR is supported, and Flatpak packages can be installed.
- The installer has an improved interface for selecting GNOME-related packages.
- After installation is complete, a snapshot is created in the FS, providing the ability to roll back to the initial state.
- The MangoWM composite server with the DMS (Dank Material Shell) shell has been added to the list of graphical environments offered for installation. The option to install the UKUI desktop environment has been removed (Ubuntu Kylin User Interface).
- The GRUB bootloader is enabled by default to detect other installed operating systems via the os-prober package.
- The settings provided by the CachyOS-Welcome application now include the ability to enable DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), specify a custom DNS server, view DNS server information, test DNS access latency, install the wezterm terminal emulator, and enable the dmemcg-booster service (which moves background application data from video memory to system memory to increase the video memory available for active gaming).
- For NVMe devices, the "kyber" I/O scheduler is enabled by default, using separate queues for write and read operations, with read requests being prioritized.
- The chwd (CachyOS Hardware Detection) utility, used to automatically detect and install drivers and kernel modules, now includes support for USB devices, the Xbox ROG Ally gaming console, and CPU models. Supported Intel CPUs now enable the intel-lpmd module to reduce idle power consumption. A hardware profile has been added for the Marvell AVASTAR 88W8897 Wi-Fi card used in the Surface Pro 4 tablet.
