FreeNAS 11.3 network storage distribution release

iXsystems presented Release FreeNAS 11.3, a distribution kit for the rapid deployment of network storage (NAS, Network-Attached Storage). The distribution is based on the FreeBSD code base, features integrated ZFS support and the ability to manage through a web interface built using the Django Python framework. FTP, NFS, Samba, AFP, rsync and iSCSI are supported to organize storage access, software RAID (0,1,5) can be used to increase storage reliability, LDAP/Active Directory support is implemented for client authorization. Installation iso image (780 MB) prepared for x86_64 architecture.

All changes:

  • Redesigned data replication engine in ZFS. Replication performance increased by 8 times. Added support for automatic resumption of interrupted data transfer sessions, parallel execution of tasks and local replication;
  • Added ACL Manager - a web interface for configuring and managing access control lists in SMB partitions;
  • For new SMB partitions, the SMB Shadow Copy module is enabled by default, which creates backups using the ZFS snapshot system. Created copies of files can be viewed in the "Previous Versions" tab in the file manager;
  • Added support for using SMB quotas defined in Active Directory;
  • The "Community plugins" repository was put into operation with plugins prepared by community representatives and not officially supported by iXsystems;
  • Added iSCSI Wizard to simplify creation of new iSCSI targets;
  • The monitoring interface has been redesigned to group warnings by type rather than alphabetically. Added the ability to set thresholds for generating alerts. Implemented a new type of persistent critical warnings that remain active until manually closed. A new Alert framework is used to periodically run handlers;
  • Rewritten interface Dashboard, which now offers a summary report on the current state of the system, network activity, CPU load and memory consumption;

  • The ability to use an address translator to run plugins is provided, without the need to assign an IP address to each plugin.
  • A new REST API has been proposed that supports Websocket and uses handlers that are the same as the web interface. The API can be used to control FreeNAS from scripts and integrate with external platforms. Added API for saving and auditing configuration files;
  • A wizard has been added to configure large ZFS pools spanning a large number of disks. The proposed interface allows you to automate the cloning of the VDEV layout to all disks;
  • Optimized ZFS performance for different types of workload;
  • Simplified configuration wizards for SMB, network settings and replication are offered;
  • Implemented support for VPN WireGuard;
  • Updated translations to Czech, French, Japanese, Russian and Simplified Chinese. In addition, the process of adding additional translations has been greatly improved.
