Elementary OS's original components are developed using GTK3, the Vala language, and its own Granite framework. The distribution is based on the project's work. UbuntuAt the package and repository support level, elementary OS 8.x is compatible with Ubuntu April 24.04. All additional applications offered for installation through AppCenter, as well as some default applications, are packaged using the Flatpak format. The graphical environment is based on the Pantheon shell, which integrates components such as the Gala window manager (based on LibMutter), the Slingshot launcher, Control Panel Switchboard, Wing top panel, Dock taskbar, and Pantheon Greeter session manager (based on LightDM).
The environment includes a set of applications tightly integrated into a single environment that are necessary to solve user problems. Among the applications, most are the project's own developments, such as the Pantheon Terminal terminal emulator, the Pantheon Files file manager, the Code text editor and the Music (Noise) music player. The project also develops the photo manager Pantheon Photos (a fork from Shotwell) and the mail client Mail (a fork from Evolution).
Key innovations:
- The tooltip tooltips in the panel have been improved to include key combinations for the first nine apps and additional information about background apps. The virtual desktop switching area now features a click-and-expand animation when dragging elements. The context menu now includes an option to remove an app from the system or open the app's page in AppCenter.
- In the AppCenter application manager, we've resolved a delayed response after clicking the "Cancel" button. Indicators in the application panel and menu are now updated when installing updates from the console or other package management interface. A notification is now sent when deleting an application via the application menu or panel.
- Dialog boxes such as password entry and logout boxes now feature a background blur effect in addition to the dimming effect.
- Several default settings have been changed in the Configurator, including enabling automatic update installation, disabling annoying Wi-Fi notifications, and removing shortcuts to the Configurator (System Settings) and the interface for switching between virtual desktops (Multitasking View). The ability to set the default PDF viewer has been added. The Wacom graphics tablet settings section has been renamed "Pen & Drawing" since it also applies to light pens. The icon for the option to allow background application execution has been changed.
Options for TrackPoint and Touchpad Drag and Drop have been added to the Mouse and Touchpad settings section.
