KaOS 2022.02 is released, a continuous update distribution aimed at providing a desktop based on the latest releases of KDE and applications using Qt. Of the distribution-specific design features, one can note the placement of a vertical panel on the right side of the screen. The distribution is developed with Arch Linux in mind, but maintains its own independent repository of more than 1500 packages, and also offers a number of its own graphical utilities. The default file system is XFS. Assemblies are published for x86_64 (3 GB) systems.
In the new release:
- By default, a KDE session based on the Wayland protocol is enabled.
- Desktop components have been updated to KDE Plasma 5.24, KDE Frameworks 5.91.0, KDE Gear 21.12.2 and Qt 6.2.3 (Qt 5.15.3 is also available, maintained by the KDE project). A new interface for setting up monitors has been introduced, the process of moving panels to different parts of the screen has been simplified, and a new overview mode has been included for viewing the contents of virtual desktops and evaluating search results in KRunner.
- Due to problems with Wayland support, the SMplayer media player was replaced with Haruna, which is also an add-on for MPV. Of the additional features, integration with yt-dlp for downloading videos from YouTube is noted.
- As an office suite, instead of Calligra, LibreOffice is proposed by default with a rendering backend based on Qt5 / kf5.
- The Calamares installer now displays warnings when conflicts are detected when partitioning disk partitions.
- A new calendar scheduler, Kalendar, is included, providing tools for managing tasks and events, and supporting integration with external calendars based on Nextcloud, Google Calendar, Outlook, and Caldav.
