MX Linux distribution release 21

The lightweight MX Linux 21 distribution has been released, created as a result of the joint work of the communities formed around the antiX and MEPIS projects. The release is based on the Debian package base with improvements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. The distribution uses the sysVinit initialization system and its own tools for configuring and deploying the system. Available for download are 32-bit and 64-bit builds, 1.9 GB (x86_64, i386) with the Xfce desktop, as well as 64-bit builds with the KDE desktop.

In the new release:

  • Switched to the Debian 11 package base. The Linux kernel has been updated to the 5.10 branch. Updated application versions, including Xfce 4.16, KDE Plasma 5.20 and Fluxbox 1.3.7 user environments.
  • In the installer, the interface for selecting a partition for installation has been updated. Implemented support for LVM if an LVM volume already exists.
  • Updated system boot menu in Live mode for systems with UEFI. You can now select boot options from the boot menu and submenus, instead of using the previous console menu. Added a "rollback" option to the menu to rollback changes.
  • By default, to perform administrator tasks through sudo, the user's password request is implemented. This behavior can be changed in the "MX Tweak" / "Other" tab.
  • The MX-Comfort theme has been proposed, including a dark mode and a mode with thick window borders.
  • The Mesa drivers for the Vulkan graphics API are installed by default.
  • Improved support for wireless cards based on Realtek chips.
  • Many small configuration changes, especially in the panel with a new set of plugins by default.
