The release of the lightweight distribution kit MX Linux 23.6 has been published, created as a result of the joint work of the communities formed around the antiX and MEPIS projects. The release is based on the Debian package base with improvements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. The distribution uses the sysVinit initialization system and its own tools for configuring and deploying the system. Available for download are 32- and 64-bit builds (x86_64, i386) with the Xfce desktop (2.3 GB), as well as 64-bit builds with the KDE desktop (2.9 GB) and builds (1.8 GB) with the Fluxbox window manager.
In the new release:
- Synchronization with the Debian 12.10 package database has been completed. Application versions have been updated. As in previous releases, the default init system continues to be sysVinit, and systemd can be installed as an option.
- The base package with the Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.1.133. Separately prepared builds with extended hardware support (AHS) are supplied with Xfce and kernel 6.14 with patches from the liquorix project.
- The MX Raspberry Pi Respin (RPI) build for Raspberry Pi boards that ships with Xfce has been updated.
- The Xfce desktop environment continues to be shipped, updated to Xfce 4.20. The mx-system-sounds utility in the Xfce environment now waits for the sound system to be ready. Server before audio playback begins. On 32-bit systems, issues with changing wallpaper and desktop settings in Xfce have been resolved.
- Improved graphical interface for installing packages — MX Packageinstaller. Expanded capabilities for working with packages in Flatpak format.
- Improved privilege prompting in various MX utilities.
- Added UEFI Manager utility for managing UEFI settings
