Network Security Toolkit 36 distribution release

After a year of development, the release of the NST 36 (Network Security Toolkit) Live distribution kit has been published, designed to analyze network security and monitor its operation. The size of the bootable iso image (x86_64) is 4.1 GB. A special repository has been prepared for Fedora Linux users, which makes it possible to install all the developments created within the framework of the NST project into an already installed system. The distribution is based on Fedora 36 and allows installation of additional packages from external repositories that are compatible with Fedora Linux.

The distribution includes a large selection of applications related to network security (for example: Wireshark, NTop, Nessus, Snort, NMap, Kismet, TcpTrack, Etherape, nsttracroute, Ettercap, etc.). To manage the security check process and automate the call of various utilities, a special web interface has been prepared, which also integrates a web frontend for the Wireshark network analyzer. The distribution's graphical environment is based on FluxBox.

In the new release:

  • The package base is synchronized with Fedora 36. The Linux 5.18 kernel is involved. Updated to the latest releases supplied as part of the application.
  • Redesigned access to OpenVAS (Open Vulnerability Assessment Scanner) and Greenbone GVM (Greenbone Vulnerability Management) vulnerability scanners, which now run in a separate podman-based container.
