Parrot 5.1 distribution release with a selection of security checkers

Parrot 5.1 is now available, based on the Debian 11 package base and including a collection of tools for system security testing, forensic analysis and reverse engineering. Several iso images with MATE environment are offered for download, designed for everyday use, security testing, installation on Raspberry Pi 4 boards and creating specialized installations, for example, for use in cloud environments.

The Parrot distribution is positioned as a portable lab environment for security experts and forensic scientists, focusing on tools for testing cloud systems and IoT devices. It also includes cryptographic tools and programs to provide secure access to the network, including TOR, I2P, anonsurf, gpg, tccf, zulucrypt, veracrypt, truecrypt and luks.

In the new release:

  • The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.18 (was 5.16).
  • Redesigned images to run in Docker containers. Introduced its own parrot.run image registry, which can be used in addition to the default docker.io. All images are now shipped in multiarch form and support amd64 and arm64 architectures.
  • Updated packages and backports, proposed new versions of Go 1.19 and Libreoffice 7.4.
  • The Firefox profile has been updated to improve privacy and security. Disabled features related to sending telemetry to Mozilla. Reworked collection of bookmarks. The default search engine is DuckDuckGo.
  • Many specialized utilities have been updated, including the reverse engineering tools rizin and rizin-cutter, the metasploit and exploitdb packages.
  • AnonSurf 4.0 anonymity tool has been updated to redirect all traffic through Tor without separate proxy settings.
  • Raspberry Pi board support has been improved, including Wi-Fi support for the Raspberry Pi 400 model.
