Proxmox Backup Server 1.1 distribution release

Proxmox, known for developing Proxmox Virtual Environment and Proxmox Mail Gateway products, has released the Proxmox Backup Server 1.1 distribution kit, which is presented as a turnkey solution for backing up and restoring virtual environments, containers and server stuffing. The installation ISO image is available for free download. Distribution-specific components are open under the AGPLv3 license. To install updates, both the paid Enterprise repository and two free repositories are available, which differ in the level of stabilization of updates.

The system part of the distribution is based on the Debian 10.9 (Buster) package base, the Linux 5.4 kernel and OpenZFS 2.0. The software stack for managing backups is written in Rust and supports incremental backups (only changed data is transferred to the server), deduplication (if there are duplicates, only one copy is stored), compression (ZSTD is used) and encryption of backups. The system is designed on the basis of a client-server architecture - Proxmox Backup Server can be used both for working with local backups and as a centralized server for backing up data from different hosts. Modes of fast selective recovery and data synchronization between servers are provided.

Proxmox Backup Server supports integration with the Proxmox VE platform for backing up virtual machines and containers. Backups are managed and data restored via a web interface. It is possible to restrict user access to their data. All transmitted traffic from clients to the server is encrypted using AES-256 in GCM mode, and the backups themselves are already encrypted using asymmetric encryption using public keys (encryption is performed on the client side and compromising the server with backups will not lead to data leakage). The integrity of backups is controlled using SHA-256 hashes.

In the new release:

  • Synchronized with the Debian 10.9 "Buster" package database.
  • The implementation of the ZFS file system has been moved to use the OpenZFS 2.0 branch.
  • Added support for tape drives that support the LTO (Linear Tape-Open) format.
  • Added support for saving and restoring vaults using a tape pool.
  • Implemented flexible policies to determine the period of data storage.
  • Added a new user-space tape driver written in Rust.
  • Added support for managing automatic cartridge feeding mechanisms in tape drives. To manage autoloaders, the pmtx utility is proposed, which is an analogue of the mtx utility, rewritten in the Rust language.
  • Sections have been added to the web interface for setting up components, jobs, and executing tasks on a schedule.
  • Added Proxmox LTO Barcode Label Generator web application for generating and printing barcode labels.
  • Support for two-factor authentication using one-time passwords (TOTP), WebAuthn, and one-time access recovery keys has been added to the web interface.
