Release of the Steam OS 3.3 distribution used on the Steam Deck gaming console

Valve has introduced an update to the Steam OS 3.3 operating system that comes with the Steam Deck game console. Steam OS 3 is based on Arch Linux, uses the Gamescope composite server based on the Wayland protocol to speed up the launch of games, comes with a read-only root file system, uses an atomic update mechanism, supports Flatpak packages, uses the PipeWire media server and provides two interface modes (Steam shell and KDE Plasma desktop). Updates are only available for Steam Deck, but enthusiasts are developing an unofficial build of holoiso, adapted for installation on regular computers (Valve promises to prepare builds for PC in the future).

Among the changes:

  • New Achievements and Guides pages have been added to the pop-up screen displayed when pressing the Steam button while playing.
  • Implemented a warning if the console temperature is out of range.
  • Added a setting to automatically switch to night mode at a given time.
  • Added a button to clear the contents of the search bar.
  • The switch to activate the adaptive brightness adjustment mode has been returned.
  • The on-screen keyboard has been optimized to simplify input using trackpads and touch screens.
  • A new interface for selecting the update delivery channel has been added. The channels offered are Stable (installing the latest stable versions of the Steam Client and SteamOS), Beta (installing the latest beta version of the Steam Client and the stable release of SteamOS), and Preview (installing the latest beta version of the Steam Client and the beta release of SteamOS).
  • Bug fixes have been made to improve performance.
  • In desktop mode, Firefox has been shipped as a Flatpak package. When you try to launch Firefox for the first time, a dialog is displayed to install it through the Discover Software Center.
  • Network connection settings changed in desktop mode are now synchronized with system-wide settings for their availability in game mode.
  • Added VGUI2 Classic theme.
  • Added support for Qanba Obsidian and Qanba Dragon joysticks in desktop mode.
  • Added a setting to scale the Steam Deck UI for external displays.
  • Updated versions of graphics and wireless drivers, as well as utilities for working with game controller firmware.
