Release of the Steam OS 3.4 distribution used on the Steam Deck gaming console

Valve has introduced an update to the Steam OS 3.4 operating system that comes with the Steam Deck game console. Steam OS 3 is based on Arch Linux, uses the Gamescope composite server based on the Wayland protocol to speed up the launch of games, comes with a read-only root file system, uses an atomic update mechanism, supports Flatpak packages, uses the PipeWire media server and provides two interface modes (Steam shell and KDE Plasma desktop). Updates are only available for Steam Deck, but enthusiasts are developing an unofficial build of holoiso, adapted for installation on regular computers (Valve promises to prepare builds for PC in the future).

Among the changes:

  • Synchronized with the latest Arch Linux package base. Among other things, the version of the KDE Plasma desktop has been updated to release 5.26 (previous release 5.23).
  • An option has been added to disable vertical synchronization (VSync), which is used to prevent tearing in output. Artifacts may appear in game programs after disabling protection, but you can put up with them if the fight against them leads to additional delays.
  • Fixed problems with some games freezing after returning from sleep mode.
  • Fixed issues with 100ms stuttering when turning on adaptive backlight mode.
  • A new firmware for the docking station has been proposed, which solves problems with detecting screens connected via HDMI 2.0.
  • The HUD (Heads-Up Display) pop-up panel uses a second level of performance and uses a horizontal layout that matches games that use a 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • Support for the TRIM operation has been enabled to inform internal drives about unused blocks in the FS. In the settings "Settings β†’ System β†’ Advanced", a button has appeared to force the TRIM operation to be performed at any time.
  • In "Settings β†’ Storage" for external devices, an option has been added to remove the device.
  • Automatic mounting of external drives with FS ext4 is provided.
  • Disabled mouse emulation for DualShock 4 and DualSense trackpads on Steam startup.
  • When Steam is not running in desktop mode, the gamepad driver is loaded.
  • Improved virtual keyboard usage in games.
  • Added support for 8BitDo Ultimate wireless controllers.
