Release of the Tails 5.8 distribution, switched to Wayland

The release of Tails 5.8 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), a specialized distribution kit based on the Debian package base and designed for anonymous access to the network, has been released. Anonymous exit to Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, except traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by default by the packet filter. Encryption is used to store user data in the save user data between runs mode. An iso image has been prepared for download, capable of working in Live mode, with a size of 1.2 GB.

In the new version:

  • The user environment has been moved from the X server to use the Wayland protocol, which has increased the security of all graphical applications by improving control over how applications interact with the system. For example, unlike X11 in Wayland, input and output are isolated to each window, and the client cannot access the contents of other client windows, nor can it intercept input events related to other windows. The transition to Wayland made it possible to enable the Unsafe Browser by default, designed to access resources on the local network (previously, Unsafe Browser was disabled by default, since compromising another application could lead to the launch of an Unsafe Browser window invisible to the user to transmit information about the IP address). The use of Wayland also enabled the inclusion of features such as sound, downloads, and alternative input methods.
  • A new interface has been proposed for configuring Persistent Storage, which is used to permanently store user data between sessions (for example, you can store files, Wi-Fi passwords, browser bookmarks, etc.). Removed the need to restart after creating persistent storage or activating new features. Provided support for changing the password for persistent storage.

  • Added support for getting information about new Tor bridge nodes by scanning a QR code. The QR code can be obtained from bridges.torproject.org or sent in response to an email sent to [email protected] from a Gmail or Riseup account.
  • Fixed usability issues in the Tor Connection app. For example, the display of percentages is provided when showing the progress of the operation, and the label Bridge is added in front of the line for entering the address of the bridge node.
