Fedora 31 release

Today, October 29, Fedora 31 was released.

The release was delayed by one week due to issues with dnf's support for multiple ARM architectures, as well as conflicts while updating the libgit2 package.

Installation options:

Also available torrents.

What's new?

  • Fedora IoT has been published - a new edition of Fedora, similar in approach to Fedora Silverblue, but with a minimalistic set of packages.

  • i686 kernels and installation images will no longer be built, i686 repositories are also disabled. Users of 32-bit Fedora are advised to reinstall the system to 64-bit. At the same time, the ability to build and publish i686 packages is preserved both in koji and locally in mock. Applications that require 32-bit libraries, such as Wine, Steam, etc., will continue to work without changes.

  • An Xfce Desktop image for the AArch64 architecture has appeared.

  • Disabled root login with password in OpenSSH. When updating a system with root access enabled, a new configuration file will be created with the .rpmnew extension. It is recommended that the system administrator compare the settings and apply the necessary changes manually.

  • Python now means Python 3: /usr/bin/python is a link to /usr/bin/python3.

  • Firefox and Qt applications now use Wayland when running under GNOME. In other environments (KDE, Sway) Firefox will continue to use XWayland.

  • Fedora is moving to use CgroupsV2 by default. Since their support in Docker is still not implemented, users are encouraged to migrate to a fully supported Podman. If you want to continue using Docker, you need to switch system to old behavior using the systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=0 option, which must be passed to the kernel at boot time.
