Release of LXQt 0.17 graphical environment

After six months of development, the LXQt 0.17 user environment (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) was released, developed by the joint team of developers of the LXDE and Razor-qt projects. The LXQt interface continues to follow the ideas of the classic desktop organization, bringing a modern look and feel to enhance the user experience. LXQt is positioned as a lightweight, modular, fast and convenient continuation of the development of the Razor-qt and LXDE desktops, incorporating the best features of both shells. The code is hosted on GitHub and is licensed under GPL 2.0+ and LGPL 2.1+. Ready builds are expected for Ubuntu (LXQt is offered by default in Lubuntu), Arch Linux, Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, FreeBSD, ROSA, and ALT Linux.

Features of the release:

  • The panel (LXQt Panel) now has a "Dock" mode of operation, in which automatic hiding is activated only when the panel intersects with some window.
  • The file manager (PCManFM-Qt) has full support for file creation times. Buttons have been added to the Tools menu to create launchers and enable admin mode, which uses GVFS to move files that do not fall under current user rights without gaining root privileges. Improved selection of mixed file types that have different MIME types. Localization of the dialog for working with files is enabled. Added restrictions on the size of thumbnails. Implemented natural keyboard navigation on the desktop.
  • Ensure that all child processes terminate at session end, allowing non-LXQt applications to write their data at session end and avoid exit crashes.
  • Improved efficiency of processing vector icons in SVG format.
  • The power management interface (LXQt Power Manager) separates idle state monitoring for offline and stationary power. Added a setting to disable idle tracking when the active window is expanded to full screen.
  • The QTerminal terminal emulator and the QTermWidget widget have implemented five modes for displaying background images and added a setting to disable automatic quoting of data pasted from the clipboard. Action after pasting from clipboards changed to "scroll down" by default.
  • In the LXImage Qt image viewer, thumbnail generation settings have been added and an option has been implemented to disable image size adjustments when navigating.
  • Support for opening and extracting data from disk images has been added to the LXQt Archiver archive manager. Provided window parameters saving. The sidebar has horizontal scrolling.
  • In the system for displaying notifications, processing of summary information about the notification is provided only in the form of plain text.
  • Work on translations has been moved to the Weblate platform. Discussion platform on GitHub launched.

In parallel, work continues on the release of LXQt 1.0.0, which will implement full support for working on top of Wayland.
