Release of LXQt 1.0 graphical environment

After six months of development, the LXQt 1.0 user environment (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) was released, developed by the joint team of developers of the LXDE and Razor-qt projects. The LXQt interface continues to follow the ideas of the classic desktop organization, bringing a modern look and feel to enhance the user experience. LXQt is positioned as a lightweight, modular, fast and convenient continuation of the development of the Razor-qt and LXDE desktops, incorporating the best features of both shells. The code is hosted on GitHub and is licensed under GPL 2.0+ and LGPL 2.1+. Ready builds are expected for Ubuntu (LXQt is offered by default in Lubuntu), Arch Linux, Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, FreeBSD, ROSA, and ALT Linux.

Initially, release 1.0 was intended to coincide with the implementation of Wayland support, and then to provide support for Qt 6, but in the end they decided not to be tied to anything and formed release 1.0.0 instead of 0.18 for no particular reason, as a sign of the stability of the project. The LXQt 1.0.0 release is not yet adapted for Qt 6 and requires Qt 5.15 to run (official updates for this branch are released only under a commercial license, and unofficial free updates are generated by the KDE project). Running Wayland is not yet officially supported, but there have been successful attempts to run LXQt components using a Mutter and XWayland composite server.

Features of the release:

  • The panel (LXQt Panel) implements a new plugin “Custom Command”, which allows you to run arbitrary commands and show the result of their work on the panel. The main menu provides the ability to move search results in drag&drop mode. Improved processing of icons displaying the system status (Status Notifier).
  • The file manager (PCManFM-Qt) implements support for “emblems”, special graphic marks that can be linked via the context menu to arbitrary files or directories. In the file dialog, options have been added to pin an item to the desktop and show hidden files. The ability to recursively apply customization settings to catalogs has been implemented. Improved implementation of smooth mouse wheel scrolling. Buttons for mounting, unmounting and ejecting a drive have been added to the context menu for the “computer:///” element. Problems when searching using Cyrillic characters in regular expressions have been fixed.
  • Options have been added to the image viewer to control the display of menus and toolbars, placing deleted files in the trash, changing the thumbnail resolution, changing the position of the thumbnail panel, and disabling anti-aliasing when scaling. Added the ability to rename images locally without opening separate dialogs. Added command line option to run in full screen mode.
  • A “do not disturb” mode has been added to the notification system.
  • The appearance configuration interface (LXQt Appearance Configuration) implements the ability to write and read the Qt palette.
  • A new “Other Settings” page has been added to the configurator, which contains various minor settings that do not fall into existing categories.
  • A switch has been added to the power management manager indicator to temporarily suspend activity checks in the system (to block the activation of power saving modes when the system is idle) for a period of from 30 minutes to 4 hours.
  • The terminal emulator provides quotation marks for inserted file names transferred with the mouse in drag&drop mode. Resolved problems with menu display when using the Wayland protocol.
  • Two new themes have been added and problems in previously offered themes have been resolved.
  • The program for working with archives (LXQt Archiver) implements a password request for access to archives with encrypted lists of files.
