GIMP 2.10.20 graphics editor release

Submitted by graphic editor release GIMP 2.10.20, which continues to refine the functionality and improve the stability of the branch 2.10. A package is available for installation in the format flatpack (package format snap until updated).

In addition to fixing bugs, GIMP 2.10.20 introduces the following improvements:

  • The toolbar has been improved. In the last release, it was possible to combine arbitrary tools into groups, but some users found it inconvenient to have to click with the mouse to expand groups. The wishes of these users have been taken into account and in this version an option has been added to automatically expand the group when the mouse cursor is placed over the icon. This option is enabled by default only for one-column panel layout, but can also be enabled in the settings for any other panel button layouts. When auto-expand is disabled, hovering the mouse over a group icon displays a tooltip with a list of all the tools in the group.

  • Provided the ability to crop in non-destructive mode, which is enabled by default. Instead of deleting the pixels of the cropped area, now only the borders of the canvas are shifted, which allows you to return to the original uncropped version at any time using the "Fit Canvas to Layers" tool without losing changes implemented after cropping, or view the old version through the "View -> Show All" menu. When writing in XCF format, data outside the bounds of the canvas is retained, but when exported to other formats, only the hotspot is retained, and data outside the bounds is discarded. To return the old behavior, the "Delete cropped pixels" flag has been added to the parameters of the Crop tool.

  • In the filter vignetting (Vignette) implements visual control of the geometry directly on the canvas, without the need to set numerical parameters. Filter control comes down to choosing the position of several circles that define the area without changes and the boundary of the cessation of pixel changes. Added two new forms of vignetting - horizontal and vertical.

  • Added a "Variable Blur" blur filter that uses a layer or channel as an input mask to separate pixels to be blurred and pixels to be kept unchanged.

  • Added "Lens Blur" blur filter, which differs from the previous one in a more realistic simulation of blur due to loss of focus.

  • Added "Focus Blur" blur filter, which uses a visual interface to control the simulation of the loss of focus, as in the updated vignetting filter. Both Gaussian Blur and Lens Blur are supported as blur methods.

  • Added filter "Bloom" with the implementation of the effect of leaking light, reminiscent of a filter
"Soft Glow", but without de-saturation. Technically, the new filter isolates the bright area, blurs it out, and then recombines it with the original image.

  • Added a new Blending Options section to the GEGL Filter Options dialog that allows you to control blend mode and opacity.
  • Filter preview results are saved in the cache even if the cache is disabled in the settings, which allows you to quickly switch between the original image and the result of applying the filter.
  • Improved PSD format support. Channels are now exported in the correct order and with their original colors. Added the ability to export images with a high color depth in a format with 16-bits per channel (previously only import was supported).
  • Painting tools can now save and load opacity and blend modes from presets.
  • Canon CR3 files are recognized and transferred to a raw photo processing application.
  • The TWAIN plugin used to acquire images from scanners has been redesigned and expanded to support 16-bit color images (both RGB and grayscale).
  • The default PNG and TIFF plugins no longer preserve color values when there is an alpha channel value of 0. The change avoids security issues when personal data is incorrectly removed from an image.
  • Added support for importing multi-page documents in front-to-back order to the PDF plugin, similar to importing animated formats and following the default export behavior.
  • Along with GIMP, a new release of the babl and GEGL libraries has also been published. IN
babl added color data conversion performance optimizations based on AVX2 instructions, and also implemented VAPI file generation for Vala plugin development. GEGL has added a generic API for working with non-Exif metadata, increased the performance of cubic interpolation and added new operations
    border-align, pack, piecewise-blend, reset-origin and band-tune.

From plans for the future, the continuation of work on the future branch of GIMP 3 is noted, in which a significant cleaning of the code base will be carried out and a transition to GTK3 will be made. The master branch is gearing up for a fork of 2.99.2, the first unstable release of the 2.99 series, from which the 3.0 release will be built.
