Release of the Archinstall 2.3.0 installer used in the Arch Linux distribution

The release of the Archinstall 2.3.0 installer has been published, which since April has been included as an option in Arch Linux installation iso images. Archinstall works in console mode and can be used instead of the default manual installation mode of the distribution. The implementation of the installation graphical interface is being developed separately, but it is not included in the Arch Linux installation images and has not been updated for more than a year.

Archinstall provides interactive (guided) and automated modes of operation. In the interactive mode, the user is asked sequentially questions covering the basic settings and actions from the installation guide. In automated mode, it is possible to use scripts to deploy typical configurations. The installer also supports installation profiles, for example, the “desktop” profile for selecting a desktop (KDE, GNOME, Awesome) and installing packages necessary for its operation, or the “webserver” and “database” profiles for selecting and installing web server and DBMS stuffing .

In the new version:

  • Added correct support for the GRUB boot loader and disk encryption.
  • Added support for configuring Btrfs subpartitions.
  • It is possible to detect the presence of an active service espeakup.service (speech synthesizer for people with vision problems) on the installation media and automatically copy its settings during installation.
  • Support for creating multiple encrypted partitions has been implemented.
  • The reliability of disk operations such as partitioning, encryption and mounting has been improved.
  • Initial support for plugins has been proposed, allowing you to create your own handlers and additions to the installer. Plugins can also be loaded over the network using the “--plugin=url|location” option, configuration file ({“plugin”: “url|location”}), API ( archinstall.load_plugin()) or package manager (pip install yourplugin).
  • The interface for manual partitioning of disk partitions has been redesigned.
