Release of the Archinstall 2.5 installer used in the Arch Linux distribution

The release of the Archinstall 2.5 installer has been published, which since April 2021 has been included as an option in Arch Linux installation iso images. Archinstall runs in console mode and can be used instead of the distribution's default manual installation mode. There is a separate implementation of the installation GUI implementation, but it is not included in the Arch Linux installation images and has not been updated for more than two years.

Archinstall provides interactive (guided) and automated modes of operation. In the interactive mode, the user is asked sequentially questions covering the basic settings and actions from the installation guide. In automated mode, it is possible to use scripts to deploy typical configurations. The installer also supports installation profiles, for example, the β€œdesktop” profile for selecting a desktop (KDE, GNOME, Awesome) and installing packages necessary for its operation, or the β€œwebserver” and β€œdatabase” profiles for selecting and installing web server and DBMS stuffing .

Among the changes in the new version:

  • Added support for unlocking encrypted disk partitions using FIDO2 tokens such as Nitrokey and Yubikey.
  • An interface for viewing the list of disks and available disk partitions has been added to the main menu.
  • The ability to create accounts has been added to the menu. Enhanced capabilities for automated user creation through a script processed by the "-config" command.
  • The "--config", "--disk-layout" and "--creds" parameters provide support for loading configuration files from an external server.
  • The ability to create different types of menus (MenuSelectionType.Selection, MenuSelectionType.Esc, MenuSelectionType.Ctrl_c) is provided.
  • Items for selecting the locale and interface language have been added to the main menu. Including added translation of the interface into Russian.
  • Installed the network-manager-applet applet when choosing a desktop profile.
  • The profile for installing the Awesome tiling window manager has been simplified, now offering only the bare minimum, without a file manager, image viewer, or screenshot utility.
