Release of KDE Gear 22.08, a set of applications from the KDE project

The August consolidated update of applications (22.08/2021) developed by the KDE project has been presented. Let us remind you that starting from April 233, the consolidated set of KDE applications is published under the name KDE Gear, instead of KDE Apps and KDE Applications. In total, as part of the update, releases of XNUMX programs, libraries and plugins were published. Information about the availability of Live builds with new application releases can be found on this page.

The most notable innovations:

  • The Dolphin file manager provides the ability to sort files by their extensions, which, for example, makes it easier to remove certain types of files from lists of recently opened documents and file dialogs.
  • The Elisa music player has full support for touch screens. Items in lists have been made taller and easier to tap on touch screens. Touching a song in the list now plays it instead of highlighting it. The ability to navigate the sidebar with the playlist using keyboard shortcuts has been returned. Added an option to disable scanning of the music collection at startup (instead, a button is offered to manually start scanning when needed). Added a sorting mode for songs by modification time (for example, to display recently added songs on top). The root directory is now set as the base directory in file navigation mode, making it easier to refer to files not in the home directory.
  • KWrite, a simple text editor for quick text editing, adds support for tabs and a split window mode that allows you to view multiple documents at the same time.
  • The Kate text editor, which is primarily aimed at writing and editing code by program developers, displays the toolbar by default. The menu has been regrouped and a new section β€œSelection” has been added with actions on selected blocks.
  • The text editors Kate and KWrite have the ability to display multiple independent cursors and simultaneously enter text or code in different parts of the document.
  • The calendar-scheduler Kalendar provides the ability to work with the address book. The user can attach an address book to the calendar and access its contents from a widget placed in the panel or on the desktop. Added support for generating QR codes to transfer contact information to a mobile device. The interface for viewing the calendar has been improved and navigation through tasks has been modernized - the sidebar now has the ability to view nested and higher-level tasks.

  • The KDE Itinerary travel assistant has been improved, helping you get to your destination using data from various sources and providing related information needed on the road (transport schedules, locations of train stations and stops, information about hotels, weather forecasts, ongoing events). A built-in barcode scanner has been implemented, with which you can quickly import information about tickets and discount cards. Added the ability to import information about trips by bus or train from online services, as well as import information about trips to events from the calendar planner. It is possible to determine alternative routes for individual travel segments. The publication of updates for the Android version of Itinerary in the Google Play Store has stopped; to install the latest version, you should use the F-Droid repository.
  • The program for creating screenshots Spectacle implemented automatic adjustment of the window size to the image when switching to the annotation mode and returning to the original size after exiting it. In the drop-down list with screen capture modes, tooltips for available keyboard shortcuts are shown.
  • Changed the design of Filelight, a program for visual analysis of the distribution of disk space and identify the reasons for spending free space. The code has been translated to use QtQuick and redesigned to simplify maintenance. Fixed an issue with clipping text in tooltips.
  • Drag&drop file transfer functionality in various applications, including Dolphin, Gwenview, and Spectacle, has been converted to use the Flatpak portal mechanism (XDG Portal) to organize the transfer of files from areas outside the isolated container without opening full access to the home directory.
  • In a session based on the Wayland protocol, when re-launching already running single-window programs via Kickoff and KRunner, the windows of already running instances are brought to the foreground.
  • In the Ark archive manager, before unpacking the archive, a check has been added to ensure that there is enough free disk space.
  • Clicking on notifications associated with certain sessions in Konsole will take you to the window corresponding to that session.
  • Added support for text searchable PDF export to the Skanpage document scanning interface (the scanned image is converted to text using OCR before being saved).
  • The Gwenview image viewer includes the ability to attach annotations. The interface for working with annotations is the same as in Spectacle.
