Release of Lakka 4.1, a distribution for creating game consoles

The distribution kit Lakka 4.1 has been released, allowing you to turn computers, set-top boxes or single-board computers into a full-fledged game console for running retro games. The project is a modification of the LibreELEC distribution, originally designed to create home theaters. Lakka builds are generated for i386, x86_64 (Intel, NVIDIA or AMD GPUs), Raspberry Pi 1-4, Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Hummingboard, Cubox-i, Odroid C1/C1+/XU3/XU4, etc. platforms. To install, just write the distribution to an SD card or USB drive, connect a gamepad and boot the system.

Lakka is based on the RetroArch game console emulator, which emulates a wide range of devices and supports advanced features such as multiplayer games, state saving, image quality enhancement of old games using shaders, game rewind, hot plugging of gamepads and video streaming. Emulated consoles include: Atari 2600/7800/Jaguar/Lynx, Game Boy, Mega Drive, NES, Nintendo 64/DS, PCEngine, PSP, Sega 32X/CD, SuperNES, etc. Gamepads from existing game consoles are supported, including Playstation 3, Dualshock 3, 8bitdo, Nintendo Switch, XBox 1 and XBox360.

In the new release:

  • The RetroArch package has been updated to version 1.10.2.
  • Updated versions of emulators and game engines. The composition includes new engines: race (Neo-Geo Pocket), bk-emulator (BK-0010/0011/Terak 8510a), same_cdi (Philips CD-i) and mame (MAME Project). The duckstation engine (Sony Playstation) has been removed.
  • For stand-alone engines, system files necessary for operation have been added, which eliminates the need to add them manually. At the same time, the system file loader is disabled, since such files are now included and available in the system directory. Necessary files have been added for the engines cannonball, dinothawr, dolphin, ecwolf, fbneo, mame2003-plus, mame, nxengine, ppsspp, prboom, scummvm, uae4arm and xrick.
  • Improved management of pairing with Bluetooth devices.
  • Updated package versions, including Mesa 22.0.1, Linux kernel 5.10.109 (PC, Amlogic, Allwinner, NXP) and 5.10.103 (Raspberry Pi).
  • Improved performance on systems with NVIDIA video cards.
  • Added support for Wi-Fi adapters with a USB interface - ASUS BT500 and TP-Link UB500.
  • The RPi.GPIO Python library has been added to assemblies for Raspberry Pi.
