LibreOffice 6.3 release

The Document Foundation объявил on the release of LibreOffice 6.3.

Writer

  • Writer table cells can now be set to have a background color from the Tables toolbar
  • Updating indexes/tables of contents can now be canceled and updating does not clear the list of steps to undo
  • Improved copying of tables from Calc to existing Writer tables: only cells visible in Calc are copied and pasted
  • The page background now covers the entire sheet, and not just inside the text borders as before
  • Improved compatibility with Word to support top-to-bottom and left-to-right writing in table cells and text frames
  • Added optional Form menu containing controls compatible with MS Office
  • Work has been done to significantly reduce the time it takes to load/save text document files. Full list of fixes here.
  • The AutoCorrect exclusion list for “Words with TWO CAPITAL” is now used when changing case in the “Start every sentence with a capital letter” and “Correct accidental cAPS LOCK” functions. This avoids automatic case changes in words like mRNA, iPhone, fMRI. The list has been renamed to "Words with DOUBLE CAPS or SMALL CAPS"

Calc

  • Added a new format for the Russian Ruble currency. The ₽ sign (U+20BD) will be displayed instead of the rub.
  • Added a new drop-down widget with functions to the line for entering formulas instead of the Sum button
  • Now the user can disable the additional dialog with search results
  • Added a new checkbox to the Data > Statistics > Moving Average dialog that allows you to trim the input range to the actual data contained before calculating the moving average. This checkbox is checked by default. Also fixed performance issues even for the case when the checkbox is not checked
  • Redesigned the “Data > Statistics > Selection” dialog
  • New function FOURIER() - for calculating the discrete Fourier transform. Added a separate dialog to the menu Data > Statistics > Fourier Analysis
  • Work has been done to significantly reduce the time it takes to load/save spreadsheet files. Full list of fixes here.

Impress / Draw

  • You can now drag multiple animation effects in the Sidebar at once to change their order
  • Huge improvements when importing SmartArt objects in PPTX files

Base

  • The Firebird Migration Assistant, previously only available in experimental mode, now prompts users to migrate from their default Base HSQLDB files.

Diagrams

  • Implemented the ability to disable the legend caption for series
  • Added the ability to select a color palette in the chart color settings

Math

  • For an alternative representation of vectors, the harpoon/wideharpoon symbol attribute is implemented, which combines the variable name with the harpoon symbol (U+20D1) in the same way as it is now for the vect/widevec attribute

Core/General

  • The LibreOffice TWAIN Scan Engine for Windows has been rewritten as a standalone 32-bit executable (twain32shim.exe). This will allow both 32 and 64 bit versions of LibreOffice to use the 32 bit Windows TWAIN component. And now, finally, LibreOffice x64 for Windows can use scanning
  • The number of saved searches in the Find and Replace dialog can be configured through expert settings
  • You can now insert a narrow non-breaking space (U+202F) into text. This action is assigned the keyboard shortcut Shift+Alt+Space
  • New "Tip of the Day" dialog that shows useful information once a day when first launched. Dialogue to be disabled
  • "What's New" dashboard containing a link to the release notes when running a new version of LibreOffice for the first time
  • Sentence selection (triple click) is now available for binding keyboard shortcuts in the Options dialog (no shortcut is assigned by default)
  • If an unmodified document template is opened in an existing window, it will no longer be overwritten by the new document. Instead, a new document will open in a new window.
  • New functionality: Redaction (we are still thinking how to translate this into Russian in the UI). Allows you to black out confidential information in a document and receive a PDF document as an output, from which it is impossible to obtain information hidden in this way. Available from the Tools > Redact menu. You can hide information in black and white.

Help

  • Added new Help pages for Python macro programming
  • Added help pages for some undocumented BASIC objects and functions
  • BASIC and Python code snippets can now be copied to the clipboard with a mouse click for later use
  • Created an online Help editor
  • Documented Calc functions CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, IFS, SWITCH
  • Calc functions now contain a reference to the release number of LibreOffice in which they were implemented

filters

  • Improvements to the EMF+ export filter
  • Added support for exporting to PDF/A-2 format, with a corresponding improvement in the interface to allow you to select PDF/A-1 or PDF/A-2
  • Added support for exporting spreadsheet template to .xltx format
  • Added support for exporting a text document template to .dotx format
  • Significantly improved support for MS Excel pivot tables
  • When exporting to PPTX, SmartArts objects are preserved so they can be edited in PowerPoint
  • Improvements when exporting to Tagged PDF

User interface

  • The new Compact Tabs option is available in Writer, Calc, Impress, and Draw. Accessible from View > User Interface.
  • The new Contextual One-Line option is ready for use in Writer and Draw. Accessible from View > User Interface
  • Sifr icon theme has been completely updated
  • The Karasa Jaga icon theme has been redesigned from 22px to 24px
  • Fonts in the LibreOffice installer dialog on Windows have been changed from Tahoma 8px to Segoe UI 9px, and the width of the dialog has also been changed
  • Sidebar width is now configurable via the expert option Office/UI/Sidebar/General/MaximumWidth
  • Changed the names for the Bullet List list styles in the Writer Sidebar to be more user-friendly. Also, names now contain the marker that will be assigned to the first level of the list

  • When creating a document online, the user will be able to select a document template (if they are created)
  • Fully functional conditional formatting dialog available in Calc Online
  • It became possible to add headers and footers to slides in Impress Online
  • Significantly improved how the preview in Impress Online updates when you change a selection or edit.
  • Dialog boxes are available in Impress Online for formatting characters, paragraphs, and slides.
  • And many many others

Localization

  • Updated dictionaries for languages: Afrikaans, Breton, Danish, English, Galician, Serbian, Spanish, Thai
  • Thesaurus for the Slovenian language has been updated

Removed / Deprecated Features

  • Java 5 is no longer supported. Minimum version is now Java 6
  • GStreamer 0.10 has been deprecated and will no longer be supported in the next version of LibreOffice 6.4. Working with GStreamer 1.0 is supported.
  • Removed KDE4 VCL backend
  • Personalization using Firefox themes has been removed due to API changes by Mozilla

Platform Compatibility

  • Development of the KDE5 VCL backend continues
  • Ready-made 32-bit rpm and deb packages for version 6.3 and later will not be provided. This does not mean that you cannot build a 32-bit build from the LibreOffice source codes. TDF is forced to conserve its meager resources. (The issue of continuing testing of 32-bit Linux assemblies was discussed on the mailing list, but I did not understand what they came to in the end)
