wattOS 12 Linux Distribution Released

After 6 years since the last release, the release of the wattOS 12 Linux distribution is available, built on the Debian package base and supplied with the LXDE graphical environment and the PCManFM file manager. The distribution strives to be simple, fast, minimalistic, and usable on legacy hardware. The project was founded in 2008 and initially developed as a minimalist edition of Ubuntu. The size of the installation iso-image is 1.2GB, it supports both work in Live mode and installation on a hard drive.

In the new version:

  • A new installer based on the Calamares toolkit has been proposed.
  • Moved to the Debian 11 package base (the last release was based on Ubuntu 16.04) and the Linux 5.10 kernel.
  • The desktop has been updated to LXDE 11.
  • Added support for Flatpak packages.
  • By default, contrib, non-free and backports repositories are activated to get more recent firmware and software versions.
  • To simplify the installation of packages, the gdebi interface is included.
  • Gparted is used to partition disk partitions.
