Release of MAT2 0.10, a metadata cleaning tool

Submitted by utility release MAT2 0.10.0, designed to remove metadata from files in various formats. The program solves the problem of residual data settling in documents and multimedia files, which may be perceived as undesirable for disclosure. For example, photos may contain information about location, time taken, and device, edited images may contain information about the type of operating system and the programs used for processing, and office documents and PDF files may contain information about the author and company. The project code is written in Python and spreads licensed under LGPLv3. The project provides a library for cleaning metadata, a command line utility and a set of plugins for integration with the GNOME Nautilus and KDE Dolphin file managers.

In the new version:

  • Added support for SVG and PPM formats;
  • Integration with the Dolphin file manager is provided;
  • Improved support for processing metadata in PPT and ODT files, also in MS Office formats;
  • Compatibility with Python 3.8 has been implemented;
  • Added launch mode without sandbox isolation (by default, the program is isolated from the rest of the system using bubblewrap);
  • The original access rights have been transferred to the resulting files and an in-place cleaning mode has been added (without creating a new file);
  • Work has been done to improve image and video processing performance.
