Five years since its last release, Xonotic 0.8.5, a free online 3D first-person shooter focused on online play, has been released. The project is a fork of the Nexuiz game, created almost five years ago as a result of a conflict between the project's key developers and IllFonic, after the intention to commercialize the game development process. Of the features of Xonotic, one can note good graphics capabilities, an advanced 3D engine, a variety of maps, and an abundance of game modes. The project code is distributed under the GPLv3+ license.
The new game has improved gameplay, maps and player models have been updated, new sound effects have been added, more aggressive bots have been proposed, a new HUD (Heads-Up Display) pop-up panel has been implemented, the menu has been redesigned, and the level editor has been expanded. Duels are singled out as a separate type of game (a specific version of deathmatch with two players). Completely rewritten web-interface for processing XonStat statistics. Added two new cards: Bromine and Opium.
Added new types of monsters: Wyvern, Golem, Mage, Spider.
Added new weapon models: Crylink and Electro.
