OpenTTD 12.0, a free strategy game simulating a real-time transportation company, is now available. Starting with this release, the version numbering has been changed—the developers have dropped the meaningless first digit in the version number, and instead of 0.12, they have created release 12.0. The project code is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Installation packages have been prepared for Linux, Windows и macOS.
Initially, OpenTTD was developed as an analogue of the commercial game Transport Tycoon Deluxe, but later turned into a self-sufficient project that significantly outperformed the reference version of the game in terms of capabilities. In particular, within the framework of the project, an alternative set of game data was created, new sound and graphic design, the capabilities of the game engine were significantly expanded, map sizes were increased, a network game mode was implemented, and many new game elements and models were added.

The new version significantly improves multiplayer support. To play together, simply launch server, which can be configured for both invite-only and unrestricted access. Thanks to the addition of support for STUN and TURN mechanisms when connecting to a network behind an address translator, the server will be immediately accessible without unnecessary complications, such as setting up network port forwarding. Other changes include displaying a vehicle loss indicator, moving the camera in the title screen background, disabling block signals by default in the GUI, and increasing the limit on the number of NewGRF (Graphics Resource File) files to 255.
