Release of OpenTTD 12.0, a free transport company simulator

The release of OpenTTD 12.0, a free strategy game that simulates the work of a transport company in real time, is available. Starting from the proposed release, the version numbering has been changed - the developers have discarded the first digit in the version that has lost its meaning and instead of 0.12, they have formed release 12.0. The project code is written in C++ and distributed under the GPLv2 license. Installation packages are prepared for Linux, Windows and macOS.

Initially, OpenTTD was developed as an analogue of the commercial game Transport Tycoon Deluxe, but later turned into a self-sufficient project that significantly outperformed the reference version of the game in terms of capabilities. In particular, within the framework of the project, an alternative set of game data was created, new sound and graphic design, the capabilities of the game engine were significantly expanded, map sizes were increased, a network game mode was implemented, and many new game elements and models were added.

The new version has significantly improved support for multiplayer games. Co-op now just needs to run a server that can be configured for both invite and unlimited access. Thanks to the addition of support for the STUN and TURN mechanisms when organizing a network connection behind an address translator, the server will immediately be available without unnecessary complications, such as setting up network port forwarding. Other changes include the display of a lost vehicle indicator, moving the camera in the background of the title screen, disabling block signals in the GUI by default, and increasing the limit on the number of NewGRF (Graphics Resource File) files to 255.
