Release of VCMI 1.0.0 open game engine compatible with Heroes of Might and Magic III

The release of the VCMI 1.0 project is available, which develops an open game engine that is compatible with the data format used in the Heroes of Might and Magic III games. An important goal of the project is also to support mods, with the help of which it is possible to add new cities, heroes, monsters, artifacts and spells to the game. The source texts are distributed under the GPLv2 license. Supports Linux, Windows, macOS and Android.

Version 1.0 is formed almost 8 years after the release of 0.99. The change of the number to 1.0 is a consequence of reaching the maximum value of the second digit of the version, which, in accordance with the logic of version numbering used in the project, led to the transition to the number 1.0 after 0.99. Main changes:

  • Game engine. Added artifact Lodestar Grail, making the area home to all Cove units (+1 to attack, defense and speed). Skyship Grail provides instant disclosure of the entire map without a fight.
  • Adventure map. Several additional buttons and hotkeys have been added to the hero exchange window for easy exchange of troops and artifacts.
  • Artificial intelligence. Optionally, an alternative NullKiller algorithm is proposed, which works well on small and medium maps. For larger maps, it is better to use the classic AI, which is also significantly improved.
  • Modding and new areas. The mod system has been significantly improved, in which the ability to add new areas has been implemented.
  • Random map generator. Added new water settings (normal water and water with islands). Implemented new algorithms for generating new terrain and placing objects provided by mods. Improved obstacle placement.
  • Launcher. Added notification system for features and fixes in new releases. Added support for a new mod repository hosted on GitHub.
