Release of the Lutris 0.5.17 platform for easier access to games from Linux

The Lutris gaming platform 0.5.17 has been released, providing tools to simplify the installation, configuration and management of games on Linux. The project code is written in Python and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Ready-made assemblies are available in flatpak format.

The project maintains a directory for quickly searching and installing gaming applications, allowing you to launch games on Linux through a single interface with one click, without worrying about installing dependencies and settings. Runtime components for running games are supplied by the project and are not tied to the distribution used. Runtime is a distribution-independent set of libraries that includes components from SteamOS and Ubuntu, as well as various additional libraries.

You can install games distributed through GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Amazon Games, Origin and Uplay. At the same time, Lutris itself acts only as an intermediary and does not sell games, therefore, for commercial games, the user must independently purchase the game in the corresponding service (free games can be launched with one click from the Lutris graphical interface).

Each game in Lutris is associated with a load script and a handler that describes the environment in which to launch the game. Including ready-made profiles with optimal settings for running games under Wine. In addition to Wine, games can be run using game console emulators such as RetroArch, Dosbox, FS-UAE, ScummVM, MESS/MAME and Dolphin.

Among the changes in the new version:

  • Added support for running games using Supermodel, an emulator of the Sega Model 3 platform that allows you to run some classic arcade games.
  • Added support for the Vita3k emulator to run games created for the Sony PlayStation Vita console.
  • Added support for synchronizing games, game statistics and game categories between multiple devices using the service on the lutris.net website.
  • The "Lutris" screen has been replaced with a "Games" screen that takes advantage of new game library synchronization capabilities.
  • Added experimental support for Umu mode, which allows you to use Proton and Pressure Vessel (a system for launching games in separate containers) without being tied to the Steam service.
  • Improved game sorting (sorting by game duration and last game time is inverted).
  • When selecting multiple games, you can use the “Categories” command for them.
  • Cemu, a Nintendo Wii U emulator, now supports WUA files.
  • When you enable the “Show Hidden Games” option, hidden games are now shown in a separate section and hidden again after viewing is completed.
  • Added support for PNG files with transparent backgrounds in banners and covers.
  • Support for libstrangle and xgamma has been deprecated.
