Budgie Desktop Release 10.5.3

The developers of the Solus Linux distribution have unveiled the release of the Budgie 10.5.3 desktop, which incorporates the results of work over the past year. The Budgie desktop is based on GNOME technologies, but uses its own implementations of the GNOME Shell, panel, applets, and notification system. The project code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. In addition to the Solus distribution, the Budgie desktop also comes in the form of an official Ubuntu edition.

Budgie uses the Budgie Window Manager (BWM) to manage windows, which is an extension of the core Mutter plugin. Budgie is based on a panel that is similar in organization to the classic desktop panels. All panel elements are applets, which allows you to flexibly customize the composition, change the layout and replace the implementations of the main panel elements to your liking. Available applets include the classic application menu, task switcher, open window list area, virtual desktop view, power management indicator, volume control applet, system status indicator, and clock.

Main innovations:

  • Ensured compatibility with GNOME 40 stack components.
  • The Raven applet (sidebar and notification display center) implements filtering of annoying notifications.
  • Hidden the default GTK theme (Adwaita) in favor of Budgie's officially supported themes (Materia, Plata).
  • In the Status applet, with the implementation of the status bar, it became possible to adjust the indents.
  • Reworked the code for monitoring applications in full screen mode to correctly restore the state after the end of such applications.
  • An option has been added to the settings (Budgie Desktop Settings -> Windows) to automatically pause the display of notifications when in full screen mode so that they do not interfere with the launch of games and when watching videos.

  • A default desktop wallpaper is included, making it easy to ship Budgie on distributions such as Arch Linux (no need to maintain a separate wallpaper package).
  • Stopped filtering notifications about adding and removing devices.
  • In the presence of the xdotool utility in the Lock Keys applet, the ability to change the state of the CapsLock and NumLock keys is implemented, and not just its display.
