Buddies Of Budgie, the organization overseeing the project's development since its fork from the Solus distribution, has released the Budgie 10.6.3 desktop environment. Budgie 10.6.x continues the development of the classic codebase, based on GNOME technologies and a custom implementation of the GNOME Shell. Development of the Budgie 11 branch is expected to begin in the future, with plans to separate desktop functionality from the layer providing visualization and information output, allowing for abstraction from specific graphical toolkits and libraries, and implementing full support for the Wayland protocol. The project code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. Budgie can be tried out on distributions such as Ubuntu Budgie, Solus, GeckoLinux and EndeavourOS.
Budgie uses the Budgie Window Manager (BWM), an extended version of the core Mutter plugin, to manage windows. Budgie is based on a panel similar in functionality to classic desktop panels. All panel elements are applets, allowing for flexible configuration, rearrangement, and customization of key panel elements. Available applets include a classic application menu, task switching, an area with a list of open windows, and a preview. virtual desktops, power management indicator, volume control applet, system status indicator, and clock.
