Release of the MaXX 2.1 desktop, an adaptation of IRIX Interactive Desktop for Linux

Submitted by desktop release MaXX 2.1, whose developers are trying to recreate the user shell IRIX Interactive Desktop (SGI Indigo Magic Desktop) using Linux technologies. Developed under an agreement with SGI that allows full recreation of all features of IRIX Interactive Desktop for the Linux platform on x86_64 and ia64 architectures. IRIX Interactive Desktop was originally delivered on SGI's graphic workstations equipped with the IRIX operating system, which peaked in popularity in the late 1990s and continued to be produced until 2006. Shell edition for Linux implemented on top of the 5dwm window manager (based on the OpenMotif window manager) and the SGI-Motif libraries. The work of the graphical interface is implemented using OpenGL for hardware acceleration and visual effects. In addition, to speed up work and reduce the load on the CPU, multi-threaded processing of operations and the transfer of computational tasks to the shoulders of the GPU are organized. The desktop is independent of screen resolution and uses vector icons. Multi-monitor desktop extension, HiDPI, UTF-8, and FreeType fonts are supported. ROX-Filer is used as a file manager.

Among the changes in the new release, there is an update of the libraries used, honing the modern version of the interface based on SGI Motif, adding a switch between classic and modern interfaces, support for Unicode, UTF-8 and font smoothing, improved performance on systems with multiple monitors, optimization of move and change operations window size, reduced memory consumption, utility for changing the theme, advanced desktop settings, updated terminal emulator, MaXX Launcher to make it easier to launch programs, ImageViewer to view images.
