Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.8 Release

Red Hat Company released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.8 distribution. RHEL 7.8 Install Images available for download by registered Red Hat Customer Portal users only and prepared for the x86_64, IBM POWER7+, POWER8 (big endian and little endian), and IBM System z architectures. Package sources can be downloaded from git repository CentOS project.

RHEL 7.x branch maintained in parallel with branch RHEL 8.x and will be supported until June 2024. The first stage of support for the RHEL 7.x branch, which involves the inclusion of functional improvements, has been completed. The release of RHEL 7.8 marked transition to the maintenance phase, where priorities shifted towards bug fixes and security, with minor improvements related to support for critical hardware systems. For those wishing to move to a new branch, after the publication of the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.2, users will be given the opportunity to upgrade the system from Enterprise Linux 7.8.

Most notable changes:

  • The interface for switching virtual desktops in the GNOME Classic environment has been changed, the button for switching has been moved to the lower right corner and is designed as a strip with thumbnails.
  • Added support for new Linux kernel parameters (mainly related to managing the inclusion of protection against new attacks on the CPU speculative execution mechanism): audit, audit_backlog_limit, ipcmni_extend, nospectre_v1, tsx, tsx_async_abort, mitigations.
  • For Windows guests using ActivClient drivers, the ability to share smart cards is implemented.
  • Updated samba 4.10.4 package.
  • Added SHA-2 algorithm implementation optimized for IBM PowerPC processors.
  • OpenJDK adds support for secp256k1 elliptic curve encryption.
  • Aero SAS adapters are fully supported (mpt3sas and megaraid_sas drivers).
  • Added EDAC (Error Detection and Correction) driver for Intel ICX systems.
  • The ability to mount partitions using the FUSE mechanism in user namespaces has been implemented, which, for example, allows the fuse-overlayfs command to be used in non-root containers.
  • The limit on the number of IPC identifiers (ipcmin_extend) has been increased from 32 thousand to 16 million.
  • Full support for Intel Omni-Path Architecture (OPA) is provided.
  • A new "storage" role (RHEL System Roles) has been added that can be used to manage local storage (file systems, LVM volumes and logical partitions) with Ansible.
  • SELinux allows a graphical session to be started for users of the sysadm_u group.
  • Added DIF/DIX (Data Integrity Field/Data Integrity Extension) support for some host bus adapters (HBAs). Qlogic HBA adds full NVMe/FC (NVMe over Fiber Channel) support.
  • Provided experimental (Technology Preview) support for OverlayFS, Btrfs, eBPF, HMM (heterogeneous memory management), kexec, SME (Secure Memory Encryption), criu (Checkpoint/Restore in User-space), Cisco usNIC, Cisco VIC, Trusted Network Connect, SECCOMP to libreswan, USBGuard, blk-mq, YUM 4, USB 3.0 to KVM, No-IOMMU to VFIO, Debian and Ubuntu image conversion via virt-v2v, OVMF (Open Virtual Machine Firmware), systemd-importd, DAX (direct access to FS bypassing the page cache without using the block layer) in ext4 and XFS, running the GNOME desktop using Wayland, fractional scaling in GNOME.
