Apache OpenMeetings 5.0 web conferencing server release

Apache Software Foundation Organization presented release of web conference server Apache Open Meetings 5.0, which allows you to organize audio and video conferences via the Web. Both webinars with one speaker and conferences with an arbitrary number of participants simultaneously interacting with each other are supported. Additionally, tools are provided for integration with a calendar scheduler, sending individual or broadcast notifications and invitations, sharing files and documents, maintaining an address book of participants, maintaining minutes of an event, joint planning of tasks, broadcasting the output of launched applications (demonstration of screencasts), and voting and surveys.

One server can serve an arbitrary number of conferences held in separate virtual conference rooms and including its own set of participants. The server supports flexible permissions management tools and a powerful conference moderation system. Management and interaction of participants is carried out through a web-interface. The OpenMeetings code is written in Java. MySQL and PostgreSQL can be used as a DBMS.

In the new release:

  • The WebRTC protocol is used to organize audio and video calls, as well as to provide access to the screen. Using HTML5, components for sharing access to a microphone and web camera, broadcasting screen content, playing and recording video have been redesigned. Installation of the Flash plugin is no longer required.
  • The interface is adapted for control from touch screens and work with mobile devices and tablets.
  • A web framework is used to design the web interface and transmit messages in real time using the WebSockets protocol Apache Wicket 9.0.0.
  • Added support for sending direct links to join discussion rooms that use a symbolic room name rather than a numeric ID.
  • Added support for editing user avatars (Admin->Users).
  • The included libraries have been updated to the latest releases. Java version requirements have been raised to Java 11.
  • Tougher rules implemented CSP (Content Security Policy) to protect against substitution of someone else's code.
  • Ensures that user account information and emails are hidden.
  • By default, the front camera is enabled for video transmission.
  • Instant change of camera resolution is provided.
