Transport company simulator OpenTTD 13.0 released

The release of OpenTTD 13.0, a free strategy game that simulates the work of a transport company in real time, is available. The project code is written in C++ and distributed under the GPLv2 license. Installation packages are prepared for Linux, Windows and macOS.

Initially, OpenTTD was developed as an analogue of the commercial game Transport Tycoon Deluxe, but later turned into a self-sufficient project that significantly outperformed the reference version of the game in terms of capabilities. In particular, within the framework of the project, an alternative set of game data was created, new sound and graphic design, the capabilities of the game engine were significantly expanded, map sizes were increased, a network game mode was implemented, and many new game elements and models were added.

In the new version:

  • Implemented support for arbitrary interface zoom levels (not just 2x and 4x magnifications) with the optional ability to simulate a retro-style display. For screens with high pixel density (HiDPI), improved automatic scaling is offered.
  • New game launch screen provides direct access to NewGRF/AI/GS settings.
  • The NewGRF (Graphics Resource File) files, which allow extending the functionality and changing the game logic, have been implemented to provide options for locomotives displayed hierarchically in the shopping list.
  • Added support for multi-track railway crossings.
  • Based on GameScripts, the ability to create your own ratings has been implemented.
  • Implemented a more natural rendering of rivers that become wider as they move downstream.

Additional highlights include the release of OpenLoco 23.01, an open source engine for Chris Sawyer's Locomotion transportation simulator. We can also mention the update of the OpenRCT2 0.4.3 project, which develops an open implementation of the strategy game RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, which simulates the construction and management of an amusement park, and also covers infrastructure elements such as shops and cafes. OpenLoco and OpenRCT2 require files with resources from the original Chris Sawyer's Locomotion and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 games. Of the differences between open engine options, support for modern platforms, an improved interface, and improved quality of artificial intelligence stand out.
