Release of the free office suite LibreOffice 7.0

Organization The Document Foundation presented office suite release LibreOffice 7.0. Ready installation packages prepared by for various distributions of Linux, Windows and macOS, as well as in an edition for deploying an online version in Docker. In pre-release, 74% of the changes were made by employees of the companies curating the project, such as Collabora, Red Hat and CIB, and 26% of the changes were added by independent enthusiasts.

Key innovations:

  • Added format support
Open Document 1.3 (ODF), which adds new features for document security, such as digitally signing documents and encrypting content using OpenPGP keys. The new version also adds support for polynomial and moving average regression types for graphs, implemented additional methods for formatting numbers in numbers, added a separate type of headers and footers for the main page, defined means for indenting paragraphs depending on context, improved tracking of changes in the document, and added a new template type for body text in documents.

  • Added support for drawing text, curves and images using the 2D library Skia and faster output using the Vulkan graphics API. The Skia based engine is enabled by default only on the Windows platform instead of the backend using OpenGL.
  • Improved compatibility with DOCX, XLSX and PPTX formats. Added support for saving DOCX documents in MS Office 2013/2016/2019 modes, instead of compatibility mode with MS Office 2007. Improved portability with different versions of MS Office. Implemented the ability to save XLSX files with table names exceeding 31 characters, as well as with checkbox switches. Fixed an issue that resulted in an "invalid content error" error when trying to open exported XLSX files with shapes. Improved PPTX export and import.
  • The kf5 (KDE 5) and Qt5 VCL plugins, which allow the use of native KDE and Qt dialogs, buttons, window borders and widgets, now support interface scaling on high pixel density (HiDPI) screens.
  • By default, for new installations, a blocking of panel movement is implemented, which allows to avoid accidental removal of the panel.
  • Added new form galleries that can be easily edited and styled by the user. For example, new arrows, diagrams, pictograms, symbols, shapes, computer network elements, and flowcharts are available.
