Release of the free sound editor Ardour 8.0

The release of the free sound editor Ardor 8.0 has been published, designed for multi-channel recording, processing and mixing of sound. Ardor provides a multi-track timeline, an unlimited level of rollback of changes throughout the entire process of working with a file (even after closing the program), and support for a variety of hardware interfaces. The program is positioned as a free analogue of professional tools ProTools, Nuendo, Pyramix and Sequoia. The code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. In the near future, ready-made assemblies for Linux will be generated in Flatpak format.

Key improvements:

  • Added a traditional interface for editing the force of pressing keys on a MIDI instrument (MIDI Velocity, data from key velocity sensors), which affects the volume of the sound produced. The interface is called “lollipops” because the vertical stripes with a ball at the end used for adjustment resemble lollipops.

  • Added a slider and sidebar to organize your composition by rearranging or copying sections. Three-point editing is supported, in which the selected range (start - end) can be moved or copied to a position corresponding to a specific point in time.
  • The interface for presenting all notes in the form of a set of piano keys (MIDI Track Piano Roll), on which notes are shown to the right of each key, octave numbers are always visible, flexible scaling is available in the “scroll” + “zoom” mode. The MIDNAM standard is used for naming MIDI-related parameters. Provides the ability to record MIDI using the piano interface.
  • Added the ability to use the Novation Launchpad Pro Grid Controller to control Ardor, such as switching clips and markers, adjusting gain levels, panning (mixing), and changing send levels.

  • Added support for Quick Groups, allowing most mixing-related controls to be applied to all selected tracks and buses.
  • Added the ability to group selected regions for subsequent joint editing, moving or trimming.
  • Added the ability to draw automation lines by hand using a mouse or touchpad, instead of automation using separately set control points.
  • The possibilities for automating the construction of a tempo map on a grid have been expanded, in conditions of processing human performances in which the tempo is not constant and from time to time speeds up or slows down a little, giving the music a special charm. When editing, you can now drag the grid in accordance with the overall tempo and adjust the lines by ear so that the grid exactly matches the performer's tempo.
  • Three new MIDI plugins have been proposed for generating rhythmic melodies using arpeggiators (turning chords into arpeggios), designed to be added to the MIDI track before the instrument plugin.
