Release of free video editors OpenShot 3.1 and Pitivi 2023.03

The release of the free non-linear video editing system OpenShot 3.1.0 has been published. The project code is licensed under GPLv3: the interface is written in Python and PyQt5, the video processing core (libopenshot) is written in C++ and uses the capabilities of the FFmpeg package, the interactive timeline is written using HTML5, JavaScript and AngularJS. Ready assemblies are prepared for Linux (AppImage), Windows and macOS.

The editor features a user-friendly and intuitive user interface that allows even novice users to edit videos. The program supports several dozens of visual effects, allows you to work with multi-track timelines with the ability to move elements between them with the mouse, allows you to scale, crop, merge video blocks, ensure smooth flow from one video to another, overlay translucent areas, etc. It is possible to transcode video with a preview of the changes on the fly. Using the libraries of the FFmpeg project, OpenShot supports a huge number of video, sound and image formats (including full support for SVG).

Major changes:

  • A new interface has been added for working with profiles that define collections of typical video settings, such as size, aspect ratio, and frame rate. More than 400 video export profiles have been generated based on a database with typical video and device parameters. Implemented support for searching for the desired profile.

  • The functions of changing the video speed (Time Remapping) have been significantly redesigned. Improved audio resampling, among other things, when playing video backwards. Added the ability to apply Bezier curves to control the acceleration or deceleration of video and audio. Fixed many stability issues.
  • The Undo / Redo system has been improved, in which the group undo option has appeared - with one action you can undo a series of typical editing operations at once, such as splitting a clip or deleting a track.
  • The clip preview and split dialog has been improved to better display the aspect ratio and sample rate.
  • Improved caption and subtitle effect (Caption) to support high DPI screens and improve support for VTT/Subrip syntax. Added support for audio waveform rendering for audio-only files, allowing the Caption effect to be applied to such files.
  • Work has been done to eliminate memory leaks and improve the efficiency of clip caching.
  • Thanks to additional caching and optimizations, the performance of working with clip and frame objects has been noticeably improved.
  • Improved control with keyboard shortcuts.

In addition, we can note the publication of the Pitivi 2023.03 video editor, which provides features such as support for an unlimited number of layers, saving a complete history of operations with the ability to roll back, displaying thumbnails on the timeline, and supporting typical video and audio processing operations. The editor is written in Python using the GTK+ (PyGTK) library, GES (GStreamer Editing Services) and can work with all audio and video formats supported by GStreamer, including the MXF (Material eXchange Format) format. The code is distributed under the LGPL license.

Main innovations:

  • Returned support for automatic alignment of multiple clips based on shared audio.
  • Improved sound wave display accuracy.
  • Automatically move to the beginning of the timeline if the playhead is at the very end when playback starts.
