Release of the GNU nano 6.0 text editor

The console text editor GNU nano 6.0 has been released, offered as the default editor in many user distributions whose developers find vim too difficult to master.

In the new release

  • Added "--zero" option to hide the title, status bar, and tooltip area to free up all screen space for the editing area. Separately, the header and status bar can be hidden and returned with the MZ command.
  • The ability to define colors in the web-like hexadecimal format β€œ#rgb” is provided. For those who do not like to specify colors in numbers, 14 text names of colors are offered: rosy, beet, plum, sea, sky, slate, teal, sage, brown, ocher, sand, tawny, brick and crimson.
  • By default, the ability to suspend editing and return to the command line via the ^T^Z hotkeys is enabled, without the need to run with the -z (--suspendable) option or enable the 'set suspendable' setting.
  • The word count shown by the MD command now depends on the --wordbounds option, which sets the word count to match the 'wc' utility, otherwise treating punctuation characters as spaces.
  • Enabled the use of hard-wrapping along the line border when pasting from the clipboard.
  • A file describing the YAML syntax is included.
