Release of the GNU nano 8.0 text editor

The console text editor GNU nano 8.0 has been released, offered as the default editor in many user distributions whose developers find vim too difficult to master.

In the new release

  • Added command line option "-modernbindings" (-/), which activates an alternative set of basic hotkeys:
    • ^Q — exit,
    • ^X transfer to clipboard,
    • ^C - copy to clipboard,
    • ^V - paste from the clipboard,
    • ^Z — cancel the operation,
    • ^Y - cancel cancellation (redo),
    • ^O - open a file,
    • ^W — writing to a file,
    • ^R - replacement,
    • ^G — search repeat,
    • ^D — repeat the search in the opposite direction,
    • ^A — setting the mark,
    • ^T — go to line by number,
    • ^P — display the current position,
    • ^E - run the command.
  • Enabled an alternative set of hotkeys to be enabled when running nano using an executable file or symbolic link with a name starting with the letter "e".
  • By default, the ^F hotkey is now used to start a forward search, and ^B to start a reverse search, with MF and MB repeating the forward and backward searches.
  • Added hotkeys And , allowing you to move the cursor to the first or last line within the current visible area, maintaining a horizontal position.
  • The 'M-' hotkey is now used to set and remove a mark, and 'M-' is now used to move to the next mark.
  • Added the ability to jump to a specific line number in a file when opening a file with the “nano filename:number” command, in addition to the previously supported “+N” (“nano +number filename”) option.
  • Specifying equal color components in #RGB values (e.g. "#555") is now mapped to xterm grayscale, allowing 14 gray levels instead of 4.
  • When an error occurs, the keystroke buffer is cleared to stop macro execution.
  • Rotating the mouse wheel now scrolls the visible area rather than moving the cursor.
