An update of the Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS distribution kit has been formed, which includes changes related to improved hardware support, updating the Linux kernel and graphics stack, fixing errors in the installer and bootloader. The composition also includes the latest updates for several hundred packages related to the elimination of vulnerabilities and issues that affect stability. Similar updates to Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.3 LTS, Kubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 20.04.3 LTS, Lubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 20.04.3 LTS and Xubuntu 20.04.3 LTS are simultaneously presented.
The release includes some improvements backported from the Ubuntu 21.04 release:
- An update to the 5.11 kernel packages has been proposed (Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.04.1 used the 5.4 kernel, and 20.04.2 used the 5.8 kernel).
- Updated components of the graphics stack, including X.Org Server 1.20.11 and Mesa 21.0, which were tested on the Ubuntu 21.04 release. New versions of video drivers for Intel, AMD and NVIDIA chips have been added.
- Updated package versions GNOME 3.36.9, GCC 10.3.0, Python 3.8.10, LibreOffice 6.4.7, containerd 1.5.2, ceph 15.2.13, snapd 2.49, cloud-init 20.4.
In desktop builds, the new kernel and graphics stack are offered by default. For server systems, a new kernel has been added as an option in the installer. Using new builds only makes sense for new installations - systems installed earlier can get all the changes present in Ubuntu 20.04.3 through the regular update installation system.
Recall that for the delivery of new versions of the kernel and graphics stack, a rolling model of update support is used, according to which backported kernels and drivers will be supported only until the release of the next corrective update of the Ubuntu LTS branch. For example, the Linux 5.11 kernel offered in the current release will be supported until Ubuntu 20.04.4, which will offer the Ubuntu 21.10 kernel. The base kernel 5.4 is shipped initially and will be supported for the entire five-year maintenance cycle.
Unlike past LTS releases, the new versions of the kernel and graphics stack will be included in existing installations of Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 by default, rather than offered as options. To roll back to the base 5.4 kernel, run the command:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic
To install a new kernel on Ubuntu Server, run:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04
