An update of the Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS distribution kit has been formed, which includes changes related to improved hardware support, updating the Linux kernel and graphics stack, fixing errors in the installer and bootloader. The composition also includes the latest updates for several hundred packages related to the elimination of vulnerabilities and issues that affect stability. Similar updates to Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.5 LTS, Kubuntu 20.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 20.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 20.04.5 LTS, Lubuntu 20.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 20.04.5 LTS and Xubuntu 20.04.5 LTS are simultaneously presented.
The release includes some improvements backported from the Ubuntu 22.04 release:
- Linux kernel 5.15 packages offered (Ubuntu 20.04 uses 5.4 kernel, 20.04.4 additionally offered 5.13 kernel).
- Updated graphics stack components, including Mesa 22.0, which were tested on the Ubuntu 22.04 release. New versions of video drivers for Intel, AMD and NVIDIA chips have been added.
- Updated package versions ceph 15.2.16, PostgreSQL 12.10, ubuntu-advantage-tools 27.10, openvswitch 2.13.8, modemmanager 1.18, cloud-init 22.2, snapd 2.55.5.
Desktop builds (Ubuntu Desktop) have a new kernel and graphics stack by default. For server systems (Ubuntu Server) the new kernel is added as an option in the installer. Using new builds only makes sense for new installations - systems installed earlier can receive all the changes present in Ubuntu 20.04.5 through the regular update system.
Recall that for the delivery of new versions of the kernel and graphics stack, a rolling model of update support is used, according to which backported kernels and drivers will be supported only until the release of the next corrective update of the Ubuntu LTS branch. For example, the Linux 5.13 kernel offered in this release will be supported until Ubuntu 20.04.5, which will offer the Ubuntu 22.04 kernel. The base kernel 5.4 is shipped initially and will be supported for the entire five-year maintenance cycle.
To roll back Ubuntu Desktop to the base 5.4 kernel, run the command:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic
To install a new kernel on Ubuntu Server, run:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04
