Rsync 3.3.0 File Synchronization Tool Released

After a year and a half of development, Rsync 3.3.0 has been released, a file synchronization and backup utility that allows you to minimize traffic by incrementally copying changes. The transport can be ssh, rsh or its own rsync protocol. It supports the organization of anonymous rsync servers, which are optimally suited for ensuring synchronization of mirrors. The project code is distributed under the GPLv3 license.

The significant change in version number is not related to functional changes in the current release, but is a delayed reaction to significant changes in the previous version 3.2.7. Version 3.3.0 mainly features bug fixes. The project's GitHub repository has been moved from WayneD's maintainer account to a separate organization, RsyncProject.

Among the changes added:

  • The "-no-overwrite" option has been added to the rrsync (restricted rsync) utility, which prevents overwriting existing files in the target directory.
  • The auxiliary scripts mapfrom and mapto, written in Perl, have been rewritten in Python and combined into a common idmap script.
  • The perl script mnt-excl has been rewritten in Python.
