The release of the Shotcut 25.10 video editor, developed by the author of the MLT project and using this framework for video editing, has been published. Support for video and audio formats is implemented via FFmpeg. It is possible to use plugins with the implementation of video and audio effects compatible with Frei0r and LADSPA. Among the features of Shotcut, one can note the ability to multi-track editing with the composition of video from fragments in various source formats, without the need for their preliminary import or recoding. There are built-in tools for creating screencasts, processing images from a web camera and receiving streaming video. The code is written in C++ using the Qt framework and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Ready-made assemblies are available for Linux (AppImage, flatpak and snap), macOS and Windows.
Among the changes in the new release:
- The ability to generate images or videos from HTML has been added. For example, this new feature allows you to use HTML to create templates with text overlayed on video. Chrome or Chromium is used to process HTML.
- A speech synthesis feature has been added to the note-taking and subtitle tools, allowing you to read text aloud. The speech synthesis engine uses the Kokorodoki engine with the Kokoro model (Russian is not supported).
- Support for creating screenshots and screencasts for adding to videos has been added. On Linux, screen recording is performed using FFmpeg on systems running X11 and GNOME Shell, KDE Spectacle, or OBS on systems running Wayland.
- Added a "Typewriter" video effect and a video generator showing the typing process.
- The following options have been added to the Properties menu: "Open with" for editing images and sound in an external application; "Reload" for reopening a file after it has been modified on disk.
- Glibc now requires at least version 2.35 (Ubuntu 22.04). FFmpeg has been updated to version 8. The SVT-AV1, libaom, dav1d, libvpx, libwebp, and whisper.cpp libraries have been updated.
