Release of Shotcut 25.12, OpenShot 3.4, Kdenlive 25.12, and Flowblade 2.24 video editors

Shotcut 25.12, a video editor developed by the author of the MLT project and using this framework for video editing, has been released. Support for video and audio formats is implemented via FFmpeg. Plugins implementing video and audio effects compatible with Freei0r and LADSPA are supported. Shotcut features include multi-track editing, allowing video to be assembled from fragments in various source formats, eliminating the need for prior import or re-encoding. Built-in tools are available for creating screencasts, processing webcam images, and receiving streaming video. The code is written in C++ using the Qt framework and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Pre-built builds are available for Linux (AppImage and snap), macOS, and Windows.

Among the changes in the new release:

  • Color depth has been increased for CPU-based video processing—data is now transferred between filters with 10- or 12-bit color representation per channel. Many effects, including transition effects and track blending operations, have been migrated to 10-bit representation. Previously, 10-bit representation was supported only in certain GPU-based effects and filters, while CPU-based operations were performed in 8-bit representation, even if the source video had a higher color depth.
  • Image processing has been transitioned to a linear color space, which helps prevent color distortions when pixel blending occurs during scaling, blurring, or overlaying. Using a linear color space requires more computation due to transformations and significantly lags behind the old mode in performance. Therefore, the settings now allow you to select the operating mode and color depth (Settings > Processing Mode submenu): "Native 8-bit CPU" (fastest and compatible with filters), "Native 10-bit CPU" (slower, but better quality), "Linear 10-bit CPU" (slowest, but best quality), and Linear 10-bit GPU/CPU (experimental).
  • A drop-down menu has been added to the Filters menu for navigating through filters suitable for the selected processing mode (GPU, 10-bit, Color, RGBA, and YUV).

  • The Filters menu provides default output for color filters in the context of color operations and audio filters in the context of audio operations.
  • An interface for navigating presets for the image or video generator based on HTML templates has been added (New > Image/Video from HTML). Two new HTML presets have been added: Chrome and Neon Flux, for overlaying text on video with a chrome and neon glow effect.

  • A button for minimizing the Shotcut interface has been added to the screenshot function, and an option for recording audio has been added to the screen content video recording function.
  • On the Linux/X11 platform, support has been added for using nvenc to record video of screen content.
  • Added support for mov_text and SSA formats to the subtitle extraction function.
  • Improved compatibility of AppImage, Portable, and Snap builds with hardware video encoders accessible via the VA-API.

Additionally, the December video editor releases are worth noting:

  • OpenShot 3.2.0. The editor features a simple user interface, making video editing easy even for beginners. The program supports several dozen visual effects, supports multi-track timelines with drag-and-drop functionality, and allows scaling, cropping, merging video blocks, smooth transitions, overlaying translucent areas, and more. Video transcoding is also available, with on-the-fly preview of changes. The project's code is licensed under the GPLv3 license: the interface is written in Python and PyQt5, the video processing core (libopenshot) is written in C++ and leverages the FFmpeg package, and the interactive timeline is built using HTML5, JavaScript, and AngularJS. Ready-to-use builds are available for Linux (AppImage), Windows, and macOS.

OpenShot 3.2.0 features a significant performance boost (32% on average); reduced memory consumption; new video effects (Sharpen, Color Map, Spherical Projection, Outline, and Lens Flare); interactive cropping; the ability to stretch or shorten playback time by dragging the edge of a clip; support for dragging keyframes on the timeline with live preview; and improved import/export of Final Cut Pro XML and EDL formats. A new experimental timeline implementation is available for testing.

  • Kdenlive 25.12.0. This editor is being developed by the KDE project and is aimed at semi-professional users. It supports DV, HDV, and AVCHD video formats and provides all the basic video editing features. For example, the editor allows you to freely mix video, audio, and images using the timeline, as well as apply numerous effects. The program utilizes external components such as FFmpeg, the MLT framework, and the Freei0r effects system. A self-contained package in AppImage format will be available for installation soon.

The new version of Kdenlive features a new, flexible docking system, allowing you to group widgets and show/hide them as needed. Layouts of interface elements can be saved within a project or in separate files for sharing. A "Welcome Screen" window has been added with introductory information for newcomers. Menu contents have been reorganized. The sound waveform visualization view has been redesigned.

  • Flowblade 2.24. A multi-track video editor designed for composing videos from individual videos, audio files, and images. The editor offers tools for trimming clips down to individual frames, applying filters, defining a custom tool order, adjusting the timeline, and compositing images (for example, you can rotate, fade, and create transition effects). The project code is written in Python using the MLT framework and is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Builds are available in Flatpak format.

The new version of Flowblade improves the synchronization of linked clips (child clips can now follow the change when the parent clip is trimmed); adds new ways to combine multiple fragments into a single object (box selection and interval selection on the timeline); makes a number of minor changes to the interface; and continues the adaptation of the codebase for GTK4.
