Release of VirtualBox 7.0.4 and VMware Workstation 17.0 Pro

Oracle has published a corrective release of the VirtualBox 7.0.4 virtualization system, which notes 22 fixes.

Major changes:

  • Improved startup scripts for Linux hosts and guests.
  • Linux Guest Additions provide initial support for kernels from SLES 15.4, RHEL 8.7, and RHEL 9.1. Cleaned up the handling of rebuilding kernel modules at system shutdown. Improved progress indication during automatic installation of add-ons for Linux guests.
  • Added support for using nested memory pages when virtualizing nested virtual machines in the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) for hosts with Intel processors.
  • Resolved issues causing crashes on macOS and Windows hosts, and freezing of Windows XP guests on AMD processors.
  • In the graphical interface, the device menu offers a new submenu for updating guest add-ons. An option has been added to the global settings to select the interface font size. In the tools for guest systems, the work of the file manager has been improved, for example, a more informative indication of file operations has been provided.
  • In the Create Virtual Machine Wizard, an issue with deleting selected virtual disks after canceling the operation has been fixed.
  • VirtioSCSI fixed a hang at shutdown of a virtual machine when using a virtio-based SCSI controller and resolved issues with recognition of the virtio-based SCSI controller in EFI firmware.
  • Provided a workaround for a bug in the virtio-net driver shipped with FreeBSD before version 12.3.
  • Fixed an issue with the 'createmedium disk --variant RawDisk' command that caused incorrect vmdk files to be created.
  • Resolved issues using USB tablets with virtual machines in multi-monitor configurations.

Additionally, we can mention the release of VMWare Workstation Pro 17, a proprietary virtualization suite for workstations, available for Linux, among others. In the new release:

  • Added guest OS support for Windows 11, Windows Server 2022, RHEL 9, Debian 11 and Ubuntu 22.04.
  • Provided support for OpenGL 4.3 in virtual machines (requires Windows 7+ or Linux with Mesa 22 and kernel 5.16).
  • Added support for WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) 1.2.
  • A new virtual module has been proposed that supports the TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) specification.
  • Added the ability to autostart virtual machines after booting the host system.
  • Implemented support for full and fast encryption modes, allowing you to balance between higher security or performance.
