Release of VKD3D-Proton 2.4, fork of Vkd3d with Direct3D 12 implementation

Valve has published the release of VKD3D-Proton 2.4, a fork from the vkd3d codebase designed to improve Direct3D 12 support in the Proton game launcher. VKD3D-Proton supports Proton-specific changes, optimizations and enhancements to improve the quality of Windows games based on Direct3D 12, which are not yet accepted into the main part of vkd3d. Of the differences, there is also a focus on using modern Vulkan extensions and the capabilities of recent releases of graphics drivers to achieve full compatibility with Direct3D 12.

In the new version:

  • Enabled support for sparse textures.
  • Various performance optimizations have been made, including reduced virtual framebuffer swap latencies (SwapChain) and faster format information detection.
  • Optimized the application of barriers in rendering, resulting in a noticeable performance improvement (15%-20% in Horizon Zero Dawn, 10% in Death Stranding, and 5-10% in many other games).
  • Fixed issues in RE: Village, Cyberpunk 2077, GravityMark, Necromunda: Hired Gun, Horizon Zero Dawn and DIRT 5.
